Undergraduate level
- Mass and Energy Balance-ENGI-3070
In this course, the concepts of mass and energy balance for closed and open systems under steady and unsteady states are reviewed. The textbook of this course is “Elementary principles of chemical processes”, by Felder and Rousseau, 3rd edition, while its supplementary material is ”Introduction to material and energy balances”, by Reklaitis.
- Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics-ENGI-3434
In this course, various thermodynamic concepts related to solution properties are discussed. The main textbook of this course is Introduction to Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics” by Smith, Van Ness, and Abbot, McGraw-Hill, 7th Edition, while its Supplementary textbook is “Fundamentals of Thermodynamics” by Borgnakke and Sonntag, Wiley, 7th Edition.
- Applied Chemical Thermodynamics-ENGI-2330
In this course, first and second laws of thermodynamics are demonstrated for open and closed systems. The textbook of this course is “Introduction to Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics” by Smith, Van Ness, and Abbot, McGraw-Hill, 7th Edition, and its Supplementary Material is “Fundamentals of Engineering Thermodynamics” by Moran, Shapiro, Boettner and Bailey, Wiley, 7th Edition.
- Pulp and Paper Manufacture-ENGI-1137
In this course, differnt processes for producing market pulps are disccused. Also, the processes for producing altered paper grades are briefly demonstrated. The main textbook of this course is “Handbook for pulp and paper technologists” by Smook, Angus Wilde Publications Inc., 3rd Edition, and its Supplementary Material is “Paper science and paper manufacture” by Peel, Angus Wilde Publications Inc., 1st edition.
Graduate level
- Forest Biorefinery-ENGI-5651
In this course, different processes for producing various value-added products and biofuel from forest biomass is discussed and the opportunities and challenges are reviwed. The main focus of this course is on thermochemical, catalystic and bioconvesion of woody biomass to value-added products. The main materials of this course are 20-30 research/review articles that are covered in 2.5-3 months. Students will then select a research topic and have a presenation and report on the selected topic.
- Advanced Green Chemicals and Processes-ENGI-5252
In this course, altered products that can be produced from lignin, hemicellulose and cellulose of woody biomass are taught. Steps required for extacting lignin, hemicellulose and celluloses from wood chips, and for purifying and converting the extracted chemicals to these value added products are comprehensively discussed. The challenges and opportunities for integrating theses processes into exisiting configurations of pulping processes are discussed. In this course, in addition to lecture materials, student will choose a research topic and prepare a report and presentation on the selected topic.
